7. Condemned

In John Chapter 11, Jesus didn't square-off with the Jewish officials. That didn't prevent Him from making them angry enough to kill Him though. He made the fatal mistake of raising Lazarus from the dead.

    John 11:
    47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
    48 If we let him thus alone, all [men] will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Why would the Romans take away their nation? The Romans appointed Herod as the king of Judea. If Jesus was declared Messiah by the people, that would make Him "King of the Jews." That would be tantamount to rebellion against the king appointed by Rome, and thus against Caesar.

So they've moved their justification for killing Him from fealty toward God, to fealty toward Caesar. They made it political.

    John 11;
    49 And one of them,[named] Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
    50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
    51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
    52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Who's the actual author of this conspiracy? Caiaphas didn't know that he wasn't speaking of himself. The same Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead, was prophesying through Caiaphas, arguing for Jesus to be put to death. Chew on that for a while.

    John 11:
    53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
    54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

In John 10, Jesus said more than once that He came to lay down His life for the sheep. Why couldn't He have simply let them stone Him all those times they wanted to in the last few chapters?

Because He was not condemned to death. He needed to be completely rejected by the Jewish officials to fulfill prophesy that He was the stone the builders rejected. If a dozen of them were to stone Him in anger, the rest of the council could say, "We didn't have anything to do with that."

In order for Him to get them to do that, He had to provoke them. Like all Adam's seed, the Jews were lazy and indecisive. So He had to take on a confrontational posture to prod them to indignation. I thrill at the fearless stance He took in their midst.

G.K. Chesterton eloquently depicted Jesus the Man at the close of his masterpiece, "Orthodoxy:"

"Solemn supermen and imperial diplomatists are proud of restraining their anger. He never restrained His anger. He flung furniture down the front steps of the Temple, and asked men how they expected to escape the damnation of Hell."

John 10:31 finds Him outnumbered, encircled by furious men grasping for bricks to hurl at Him. Did He run? No. He challenged their righteousness:

    John 10:
    32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

In the English translation of "The Confessions of St. Augustine," that I read years ago, one of the things that revulsed Augustine about Christianity prior to his conversion, was that he considered it, "womanish."

That's because religion doesn't present Jesus in His confrontational, aggressive, testosterous pose. The prissy comportment religio-fied men present to the world continues to repel masculine men from the faith today.

The depiction I perceive is that of a meme I once viewed online: a Canadian commando decked-out in all his combat gear hunkered-down next to a rock. The thought-bubble said, "They've got me surrounded... poor bastards!"

In my book, "Legion: Glory Unveiled," I outline how Jesus took this same adversarial - "C'mon, mess with Me" - stance against the invisible powers and principalities that haunted and controlled the region.

John Chapter 12 is rich with insightful stuff, but Jesus doesn't square-off with the religious officials. In Chapter 13 He washes the apostles' feet, Judas runs off to betray Him, and He launches into His farewell address to the other 11 apostles.

Chapters 14-17 continue His parting words to His disciples, including His great "High Priestly" prayer that He lifted up for them and for us (the summation of Chapter 17).

In Chapter 18 He is arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, hauled-off to the high priest's house, interrogated and delivered to Pilate: the direct representative of Caesar.

Here He doesn't take the combative stance. That was all intended to bring this about. Now He takes on the stance of the sacrificial Passover Lamb, offering no resistance at all.

In Chapter 19 He is scourged and crucified. Thus endeth the combat scenes in the Gospel of John. What appeared to be defeat was eternal victory.

But the scenes in John where Jesus confronts the authorities - calling them liars and thieves, children of the devil, telling them that they will die in their sins, declaring Himself to be God - pale in comparison to the confrontations depicted in the other Gospels.
